Xbox Will Introduce Monthly Cloud Gaming Limits for Game Pass Subscribers in November

04/09/2026Đô Nguyễn3 Mins Read

Xbox is preparing to introduce monthly usage limits for its cloud gaming service, marking a significant change for Game Pass subscribers who regularly stream games instead of downloading them.

Starting in November, the number of cloud gaming hours available each month will depend on the player’s Game Pass tier. According to Xbox, the new limits will apply as follows:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours per month
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours per month
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours per month

Xbox Cloud Gaming has offered game streaming since 2020, allowing users to play supported titles over an internet connection on compatible phones, tablets and other devices. Until now, eligible Game Pass members have been able to use the service without a fixed monthly playtime allowance.

Xbox says the new policy is expected to affect around 4% of Game Pass subscribers. The company acknowledges that the change could be particularly noticeable for players who rely heavily on cloud gaming.

Once a subscriber reaches the monthly allowance, Xbox will offer the option to purchase additional cloud gaming hours. Pricing has not yet been announced and is expected to vary depending on the market.

The company is also expanding access to cloud gaming beyond Game Pass. Players will be able to purchase cloud playtime separately, allowing them to stream eligible games on supported devices without maintaining a Game Pass subscription.

More details, including the price of additional playtime, supported games and how users can monitor their remaining hours, are expected to be released in November.

Xbox Says Cloud Gaming Costs Are Driving the Change

Xbox says the decision is primarily linked to the rising cost of operating its cloud gaming infrastructure. As more players use the service and spend longer periods streaming games, the resources required to maintain performance and reliability also increase.

The company believes monthly limits will help control those costs while allowing it to continue investing in the stability and performance of Xbox Cloud Gaming. At the same time, Xbox acknowledges that the new model could mean higher costs for some users.

The change comes during a period of major transformation for Xbox. The company has undergone significant restructuring this year, including thousands of job cuts and changes to its internal studio organization. Game Pass pricing has also shifted following earlier increases, while Xbox hardware prices have seen further adjustments.

More recently, Xbox introduced a program allowing owners of certain physical games to obtain digital versions of their titles. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to prepare its next-generation Xbox hardware, reportedly known internally as Project Helix.

The introduction of cloud gaming limits adds another major change to Xbox’s broader strategy as the company continues to balance subscription growth, infrastructure costs and its push toward a more flexible gaming ecosystem.
