MacBook Ultra: What We Know So Far About Apple’s OLED Touchscreen Mac

MacBook Ultra: What We Know So Far About Apple’s OLED Touchscreen Mac

17/08/2026Đô Nguyễn5 Mins Read

Apple is reportedly developing a new high-end MacBook that could introduce several major changes to the company’s notebook lineup, including an OLED display and touchscreen support.

The machine has been referred to as the “MacBook Ultra,” although Apple could ultimately keep the MacBook Pro name and position the device as its most premium configuration.

The Ultra branding itself remains unconfirmed. Apple is also rumored to be considering the name for other upcoming products, including a higher-end AirPods model and a potential foldable iPhone.

A New Design for the MacBook

The MacBook Pro received its current major design overhaul in 2021 alongside the introduction of the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. After several years with essentially the same exterior, Apple’s next high-end MacBook could finally bring a fresh design.

One possibility is a slimmer chassis, which would make the computer more compact while retaining its large-screen format.

Apple may also replace the familiar display notch with a Dynamic Island-style cutout. Such a change could provide a more consistent interface for Siri and other AI-powered functions across Apple’s devices, particularly as iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate bring Apple’s software platforms closer together.

14-Inch and 16-Inch Models

The rumored MacBook Ultra is expected to follow the current MacBook Pro strategy by offering two screen sizes.

Apple is reportedly preparing both 14-inch and 16-inch versions, giving professional users the choice between portability and a larger working area.

OLED Display and Touch Support

Perhaps the biggest change will be the display.

The upcoming MacBook is expected to become Apple’s first Mac with an OLED panel. The technology is already widely used across Apple’s iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad Pro products, but OLED has been slower to reach larger laptops because of manufacturing costs and other technical considerations.

Compared with mini-LED, OLED can deliver deeper blacks, stronger contrast and more precise control over individual pixels. Each pixel can be switched off completely when displaying black, reducing the light leakage associated with backlit displays. OLED can also provide excellent HDR performance, although some mini-LED panels can still achieve higher peak brightness.

The display could also introduce another first for the Mac: touch input.

Rather than replacing the keyboard and trackpad, touchscreen functionality is expected to complement them. Users could interact directly with macOS elements using their fingers when appropriate, giving the MacBook some of the flexibility associated with the iPad while retaining the traditional Mac interface.

Apple is reportedly adapting macOS Golden Gate to work more naturally with touch controls. The company may also reinforce the display hinge to prevent the screen from moving excessively when users tap it.

Software Points to a Touchscreen Mac

Recent macOS developments have provided some clues that Apple is preparing its desktop operating system for touch interaction.

In macOS Golden Gate, Apple has expanded direct touch interaction within Sidecar, allowing users to interact with Mac interface elements when an iPad is being used as an external display.

The operating system also reportedly includes a pull-to-refresh gesture similar to the one commonly found on smartphones and tablets. The gesture can be used in applications such as Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts and Calendar.

While such a feature can be useful with other input methods, its presence makes particular sense on a future touchscreen Mac.

Which Chips Will Power It?

The processor strategy for the first MacBook Ultra could be unusual.

Current MacBook Pro models use Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, and those chips are expected to power the first generation of the new high-end notebook as well.

Apple is reportedly preparing its standard M6 chip for late 2026, but plans for M6 Pro and M6 Max versions have apparently changed. Instead of extending the M6 family with higher-performance variants, Apple is said to be accelerating development of the M7 generation, with a greater emphasis on neural processing and AI workloads.

That could leave the M5 Pro and M5 Max as the most practical choices for the first MacBook Ultra. Waiting for the M7 generation would otherwise push the product launch further into the future.

A second-generation model could eventually move to M7 Pro and M7 Max processors, with that version reportedly targeted for late 2027 or early 2028.

Premium Pricing Expected

The OLED MacBook is unlikely to be an inexpensive upgrade.

Apple increased Mac prices in June 2026, with some MacBook Pro configurations becoming $300 more expensive. Following those increases, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip starts at $2,499, while the 16-inch M5 Pro model starts at $2,999.

Given the additional cost of OLED technology, a touchscreen system and other potential hardware changes, the MacBook Ultra is expected to sit above the current MacBook Pro pricing structure.

Apple has yet to reveal official pricing, so the final cost remains unknown.

Possible Launch Window

Current reports point to a launch sometime in late 2026 or early 2027, with mass production potentially beginning toward the end of 2026.

If Apple releases the machine in 2026, October through December would be the most likely window. The device is not expected to appear alongside the company’s September iPhone event, which traditionally focuses on the iPhone and Apple Watch.

A launch in 2027 could instead take place during Apple’s first major event of the year.

However, the schedule could still change. Apple is reportedly dealing with ongoing memory supply constraints, and its ability to secure sufficient components could influence the final production and release timetable.

For now, the MacBook Ultra remains an unannounced product, but the combination of OLED, touchscreen support, a redesigned chassis and enhanced AI capabilities could make it one of the most significant changes to Apple’s MacBook lineup in years.
