Apple has officially announced a major leadership transition, with Tim Cook set to step down as Chief Executive Officer and John Ternus, the company’s current head of hardware engineering, taking over the role.
According to the announcement, Cook will remain in his position through the summer of 2026. Starting September 1, 2026, Ternus will assume the CEO role and join Apple’s Board of Directors. Cook will transition to Executive Chairman, where he will continue supporting key aspects of the company, including engagement with global policymakers.
In his statement, Tim Cook described leading Apple as the greatest privilege of his life. He expressed deep appreciation for the team that has helped shape products and services impacting millions worldwide. He also praised Ternus as a leader with strong engineering insight, innovative thinking, and the integrity needed to guide Apple into its next chapter.

Ternus, in response, said he is honored by the opportunity and optimistic about Apple’s future. Having spent most of his career at the company, he has worked alongside Steve Jobs and credits Cook as a mentor. He emphasized his commitment to continuing Apple’s mission, building meaningful products, and upholding the values that have defined the company for decades.
Apple noted that the transition has been approved by the Board of Directors as part of a long-term succession plan. Current board chair Arthur Levinson will move into the role of lead independent director under the new structure.
