Spotify Says Disco Ball App Icon Is Temporary, Classic Logo Returning Soon

Spotify Says Disco Ball App Icon Is Temporary, Classic Logo Returning Soon

18/05/2026Đô Nguyễn2 Mins Read

Spotify has confirmed that its recently introduced disco ball app icon is only a temporary design change and that the standard green logo will return later this week.

The music streaming platform surprised many users after replacing its familiar flat green icon with a shiny photorealistic disco ball on mobile devices. The redesign was launched as part of Spotify’s 20th anniversary celebration, intended to add a playful and festive touch to the company’s milestone year.

However, the unusual icon quickly sparked mixed reactions online. Some users enjoyed the fun visual update, while others worried that the new look might become a permanent replacement for the classic Spotify branding.

To clear up the confusion, Spotify has reportedly responded directly to social media discussions, reassuring users that the disco-themed icon was always meant to be temporary. According to the company, the original app logo will soon return across supported devices.

The response highlights how strongly many people feel about the appearance of their smartphone home screens. App icons have become part of personal digital aesthetics, especially on platforms like iPhone, where users often carefully organize themes and visual styles. A dramatic icon change can easily stand out in ways some users dislike.

Despite the criticism, others appreciated Spotify’s willingness to experiment with its branding in a lighthearted way. Some users even suggested that the company should keep the disco ball design available as an optional alternate icon rather than removing it completely.

This is not the first time a major social media or tech platform has temporarily changed its icon for a celebration. Back in 2020, Instagram introduced several retro-inspired app icon options for a limited-time anniversary event, allowing users to choose between different designs.

While Spotify’s disco ball experiment may not have pleased everyone, it succeeded in drawing attention and creating conversation around the company’s 20th birthday celebration. For now, though, the brief dance party is coming to an end as the familiar green logo prepares to make its return.
