Apple has issued new instructions to its retail stores and authorized service providers on how to diagnose and handle inner display cracking affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units. The move signals that the company is taking steps to standardize inspection, repair, and replacement procedures as reports of the issue emerge.
According to a memo obtained by MacRumors, Apple distributed internal guidance to Apple Store employees and authorized service technicians this week, outlining procedures for identifying and addressing reports of cracks on the iPhone Duo’s inner display.
Under the instructions, technicians should inspect affected devices and proceed with repairs or replacements in accordance with Apple’s standard service procedures. While the guidance does not introduce a new repair process, its distribution indicates that Apple wants service teams to handle reported cases consistently.
The memo follows Apple’s public acknowledgment on Monday that a small number of iPhone Duo devices are experiencing inner display problems. The company advised customers encountering display issues to contact AppleCare for assistance with a replacement.
Apple emphasized that most iPhone Duo units are not affected. For devices exhibiting the defect, however, the problem appears to develop relatively early during use.

Despite the reports, Apple has not announced a recall of the iPhone Duo or introduced a dedicated public repair program for the issue on its support website.
Initial complaints surfaced approximately one week after the first iPhone Duo units reached customers. Several early adopters reported cracks on the inner display, accompanied by visible lines running down the center and toward the right side of the screen.
Meanwhile, electronics repair specialist iFixit conducted a teardown of the iPhone Duo to examine its internal construction. Its preliminary assessment suggested that a defective hinge could be responsible for the display damage in affected units.
Apple has not yet confirmed the underlying cause of the problem or commented on iFixit’s findings. The company has also not disclosed how many devices are affected or whether the issue is directly related to the hinge design.
For now, Apple’s internal guidance provides service teams with a standardized approach to handling customer complaints, while affected owners are encouraged to contact AppleCare for further assistance. The precise cause and full extent of the display issue remain unclear.
