Microsoft is refreshing its compact Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X2 Plus processors, promising significant gains in graphics and local AI performance while raising the starting prices of both devices.
Microsoft has introduced new editions of the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, with the Snapdragon X2 Plus platform representing the biggest change under the hood. The two compact Windows devices retain the overall designs and most of the hardware features of last year’s models.
The Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition starts at $1,149.99, up from $799.99 for the previous generation. The Surface Laptop 13-inch Second Edition is also more expensive, starting at $1,199.99 compared with $899.99 for last year’s model.
Part of the price increase comes from a change in memory configurations. Microsoft is dropping the 8GB entry-level option, with both models now starting at 16GB of RAM and offering configurations with up to 24GB.
Snapdragon X2 Plus targets performance and AI
The six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus is the key hardware upgrade in the refreshed Surface lineup. Microsoft says the new processor can deliver up to 18 percent greater battery efficiency, more than 60 percent faster graphics performance and up to 95 percent faster local AI inference through its integrated NPU.
Those improvements are also reflected in Microsoft’s battery-life estimates. The Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition is rated for up to 13 hours of web browsing, roughly one hour longer than the previous model.
The Surface Laptop 13-inch Second Edition is rated for up to 18 hours of web browsing, representing an increase of about two hours. The longer runtime could make the compact laptop more suitable for users who frequently work away from a power outlet.
Familiar design and display
Beyond the processor and memory changes, Microsoft is keeping the overall hardware design largely unchanged. The Surface Pro 12-inch continues to feature a 2,196 x 1,464 LCD display with a 220 PPI pixel density and a refresh rate of up to 90Hz.
The strategy puts the focus on internal performance rather than a major redesign. Users upgrading from last year’s models should therefore see familiar hardware on the outside, while the newer Snapdragon platform brings improvements in processing, graphics and on-device AI capabilities.
Microsoft plans to begin selling both the Surface Pro 12-inch Second Edition and Surface Laptop 13-inch Second Edition on October 13. With the higher entry prices and 16GB RAM minimum, the refreshed models are positioned toward users looking for compact Windows PCs with longer battery life and stronger local AI performance.
