Samsung Eyes Next Foldable Breakthrough with Trifold Successor and Sliding Phones by 2027

21/03/2026Đô Nguyễn3 Mins Read

As foldables mature, Samsung is reportedly preparing a new wave of innovation with lighter trifold devices and practical sliding smartphones aimed at balancing larger displays with everyday usability.

Foldable smartphones have matured significantly in recent years, overcoming many of the early limitations that once held them back. Devices are now slimmer, more durable, and feature less noticeable screen creases—making them increasingly appealing to mainstream users. However, the apparent discontinuation of the Galaxy Z TriFold just months after its debut has raised questions about Samsung’s next move in this space.

With foundational challenges largely addressed, the industry is now shifting its focus toward more advanced concepts, particularly trifold and sliding form factors.

Advancing the Trifold Concept

Samsung has long been recognized as a pioneer in the commercialization of foldable smartphones. Through continuous refinement, the company has pushed the boundaries of design, achieving thinner and more resilient devices. Recent models like the Galaxy S25 Edge highlight its ambition to deliver ultra-slim form factors without compromising performance.

Although the Galaxy Z TriFold may no longer be in active production, reports indicate that Samsung is working on a next-generation trifold device. Expected to arrive around 2027, the new model could feature a lighter build and more optimized thickness, aiming to deliver a more polished and practical user experience compared to earlier iterations.

Exploring Sliding Smartphone Designs

In parallel with trifold development, Samsung is also experimenting with sliding smartphones as another way to expand screen real estate while maintaining portability.

Unlike some motorized concepts seen in the market, Samsung’s approach is believed to rely on manual sliding mechanisms. This design choice could help reduce mechanical complexity while preserving a slim profile and improving long-term durability.

A prototype showcased at Mobile World Congress offered a glimpse into this direction, suggesting a more refined and practical implementation than earlier concepts. The goal is to provide users with a larger display when needed, without sacrificing the convenience of a compact device.

A Continued Push for Mobile Innovation

While official details remain limited, Samsung’s direction is clear: to keep redefining the possibilities of smartphone design. Both trifold and sliding devices represent ambitious attempts to balance larger displays with everyday usability.

As foldable technology continues to evolve, its long-term success will depend not only on innovation but also on practicality, versatility, and user experience. These factors will ultimately determine whether the next wave of experimental designs can move beyond niche appeal and into widespread adoption.
